The word "rare" doesn't even begin to describe this 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL gullwing recently found inMontreal, Quebec. Believe it or not, this Mercedes masterpiece turned up listed on eBay (and the bidding has already surpassed half a million dollars!), as hopeful owners continue to put their best bids forward.

This iconic Mercedes 300SL is claimed to be all original and never restored. It could be one of the best examples we've seen, with just 31,000 miles on the odometer and only a two owner history! Its current owner bought the car from the original owner in 1962 and says it has been regularly maintained its whole life. In 1967 they had it resprayed in this nice silver tone and at some point added fog lamps out front.

Now before you open up your wallet, there's a small catch... The seller claims the repair history and original title were stolen from his house! Luckily, they still have a valid title and proof of ownership to pass along to the highest bidder.

This inline-six engine is good for 212 horsepower and was actually the first car engine equipped with direct injection. Designed with functional and stunning aerodynamics, the 300SL earned the title as the fastest production car at the time!

The Canadian connection claims the first owner supposedly managed an airport up in a remote region of Canada and used to enjoy driving the car to up and down the runway often. Seems a little like an urban legend to us, but then again... you never know.
