The longtime favorite taxi, Checker Motors has filed for bankruptcy protection last Friday January 16. Although the company ceased manufacturing these iconic cabs in 1982, it remained a supplier of parts to the Big 3 in Detroit. Autoblog.com reports that declining sales and increased costs in raw materials are held as the culprit. However, it also seems that labor costs were a contributing facotr. Seems that union negotiations lasting more than a year were unable to come to an agreement.Its probably a little known fact but rock and rollers might remember that George Thorogood and The Destroyers did a 1981concert tour travelling the 48 continental states in a Checker car!
