The Nürburgring 24 Hours has just started! The grueling annual endurance race is being run a month earlier this year with 60 fewer cars. A total of 190 cars in 3 groups, each with between two and four drivers will race for 24 hours around the green hell. This year saw the introduction of a “40 fastest cars” shootout which placed the 40 fastest cars at the front of the grid. These cars are fitted with a flashing light behind the windscreen on the passengers side.
The fastest cars shootout took place yesterday with BMW’s Team Schubert taking pole. Uwe Alzen peddled his No. 19 BMW Z4 GT3 to a best time of 8:18.382, in front of the No. 26 Mamerow Racing Audi R8 LMS ultra of Christian Mamerow by 1.319 seconds. BMW fans will be hoping the team can repeat Schnitzer Motorsport’s 2010 success and break the stranglehold of Manthey Racing’s Porsche 997 GT3-RSR’s. Gemballa Racing will also be competing in their McLaren MP4-12C GT3 with Nick Heidfeld, Klaus Ludwig, Sascha Berth and Hendrik Vieth.
