Audi R18 TDI | Modern Technology is Fascinating (Autoblog)

Audi R18 TDI pushes the limits of lightweight technology

The Audi R18 TDI, which took home the trophy at this years 24 Hours of Le Mans, is a remarkable piece of engineering. Audi built the R18 TDI from a unique monocoque chassis, with a beating heart of a 3.7-litre turbo-diesel V6 that develops more than 540 horsepower.

But that isn't what is amazing about this car. Oh no!

What is amazing about the R18 TDI is how ultra-lightweight it is. Weighing in at just 909 kilograms (2,000 pounds), this racer doesn't need much power to get it cranking. In fact, it requires so little effort to move the vehicle that Audi Canada decided to release a video to exemplify just how miniscule of an effort is necessary to get the vehicle rolling. Audi better keep the car strapped down when it's not in use or a gust of wind may just sweep it away and make it the first R18 TDI to take part in an unmanned flight.
